The 2006 Deutz was epic - beautifully honeyed but with a crisp apple finish. The 2009 Haut Batailley was giving as much away as a teenager on their phone so that's been recorked for lunch tomorrow and Rosso di Montalcino yet again saved the day. It's 11.30, the missus is asleep in the armchair and I'm not far off heading the same way - a perfect New Years Eve. Looking forward to a morning cuppa, New Year's Day walk and pint!

Just can't get enough of Nebbiolo at the moment. This latest 'school night' Barolo is from the elegant 2021 vintage. Didn't decant - didn't have time - but it has delivered from the off. Classic Nebbiolo flavours of red cherry, rose petal and fennel but with grippy tannins. Said tannins were immediately softened by the mushroom & bacon tagliatelle that this washed down. I haven't tasted the winery's premium wines yet, but I certainly will soon. This is circa £24 a bottle on the Songbird Wines website and worth every penny 👍

A fab turn out for the Songbird Wines Christmas Tasting on Wednesday in Canterbury. We had an extra showing of delicious Riojas to celebrate the end of Rioja Wine Month. Every wine was banging so big thanks to producing such lovely vino!

With a nod to Beaujolais Noveau day I opted for this gorgeous Gamay St Romain tonight, sourced from the excellent in Le Mans. It was delicious.

Yes, it's all happening. You may have seen I'm hosting a tasting Updown Farmhouse on 6th December, but the week before is the Songbird Wines Christmas Tasting at Canterbury's Lilford Gallery. This is one of our biggest events of the year and is only £10 per ticket! There will be some some gorgeous wines to taste at all price points, plus a table dedicated to 'the seriously good stuff' - I think you know what I mean 😉
It's getting pretty full but we can squeeze a few more local wine lovers in. You can book via the website on the link in bio. We've always had such fun teaming up with so we thought we'd 'Do It Again'. Look forward to seeing you on the night.

There's Albariños and there's absolute knockout Albariños. This gorgeous 2022 from Finca Garabelos certainly falls in the latter category. Loads going on with citrus, white peach and ginger but it's the concentration that's won me over tonight. A dangerously delicious wine and worth every penny of its £33 price tag. To order before it sells out (or I drink it all) click link in Bio.

Yes, one might take time to ponder if the elegant wines of Piemonte could be matched with the spicy food of southern India, but it worked beautifully. The 2018 Camp Gros Martinegna Riserva was sublime and just confirmed what superb wines are available from this underrated vintage. 2014 - another unfashionable year - was superb too. The 2020 Langhe Chardonnay was gorgeous and must be one of the best white Burgundy Doppelgängers around at this price.
Thank you

After the hosting the press and Royalty last week, Monday was the launch of Domaine Evremond to the wine trade - and they certainly turned out, most travelling a lot further than I had to.
Like all the best wine estates, there's a great story behind this one - unlike most, it just happens to be ten or so years old. Two of the main players - Patrick McGrath MW & Mark Gaskain - recounted the tale of how the Domaine came to be which involved its fair share of fate, determination and trust. The wine is delicious with an aroma that happens to bring to mind the fruit grown in orchards on this land in the past. The touch of Silex in the soil gives it a flinty quality and its own character.
The winery is hugely impressive, the cellars vast and atmospheric and lunch in the pressing room was marvellous - as an added bonus, Javier Rodríġuez from C.V.N.E. was there to present his fabulous new Rioja releases.
Although the English weather did its best to throw the proverbial spanner, with perfect timing the clouds parted (sort of), the rain stopped (for a bit) and we had a post lunch stroll amongst the chalky vineyards of one of the most exciting wine projects the UK has seen. Mondays don't get much better than this.
Songbird Wines will be offering the wine on its release in Spring 2025.

First bottle from my mixed case bought from in Le Mans and what a corker - this Burgundy did not disappoint. 2018 was quite a hot year so can be a bit of a gamble but I was assured this was a safe bet as the Les Fichots Premier Cru vineyard performs well in warmer vintages. Ripe and savoury but not at all cooked, the fruit is generous and concentrated. It was splendidly paired with some pork shoulder steak from in Wingham and I am enjoying the final glass as I write this, listening to the brilliant Freak Zone on - Happy Sunday! .nicolas_rossignol

If you ever find yourself in Le Mans (a lovely city which was a revelation) then do yourself a favour and pay a visit to Le Bar à Vin just off the main square. I could have quite easily spent a small fortune here if I hadn't already filled the boot of the family car with other oenological purchases. Owner Damien did however advise me on a superb mixed six that I am eager to tuck in to.
If, unlike me, you happen to be without 3 toilet needing boys and a drive home then I'm sure you'd be tempted to drink a bottle and plate of charcuterie seated at one of the wonderful barrel tables, as were a pair of lucky gentlemen sampling the bottle of 1995 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf du Pape, held by Damien in the picture. In the words of Arnie - I'll be back!

So, where to go? I decided to stay in Bourgueil AC and visit the superb Domaine Guion based in Benais. The winery has been in the family for generations but has been bio-dynamic since 1965! Current owner Stéphane's wines are really a step up in quality to many other reds I've tasted in this part of the Loire with superb structure and purity of fruit - seriously grown up wines. Stéphane was incredibly generous opening up so many fantastic wines and the final bottle was a mystery aged bottle of his Les Deux Monts cuvée, which was 2009 vintage. It was beautifully soft and elegant and reminded me of a 1980s Left Bank Claret when Bordeaux tasted like, well Bordeaux. The great news is that Stéphane's delicious 'Candide' is now available in the UK and will shortly be available on the Songbird Wine website at the bargain price of £19.75. If you like minimum intervention, vibrant Cabernet Franc then this is the wine for you. Mrs. Songbird and I even managed to escape the kids for a few minutes in Stéphane's underground cave - next time we'll take a bottle and a couple of glasses!
