Continuing my Father's Day tradition of opening a bottle from the birth year of one of my offspring, today I was thrilled to pull a cork from number 3 son Julius' year, 2018. This vintage is overlooked for Italian reds but produced some brilliant wines if you look for them - along with a very wonderful son! The wine has got the legs to last for a bottle to be shared with Jools on his 18th I reckon. Happy Father's Day everyone.

Ah Walberswick. There are few places I know that are better to watch an English sunset than the secret 'Champagne Bench' of this wonderful village. Any quality fizz will do at this spot & on this occasion my extended family and I enjoyed the delicious Cava Reserva. Throw in a bracing swim in the North Sea, a successful hour of crabbing and an excellent pint of bitter and you have a perfect weekend in one of the most tranquil parts of England (out of holiday season!).

If Morcombe & Wise drank St. Joseph, it would be this. It's very delicious and offers all the right notes, in the right order. Will be available on website - if I don't end up drinking my entire allocation.

A skin contact wine that will appeal to a market that thinks they don't like orange wine. This is very enjoyable and quite delicious. Arriving soon - is Canterbury ready for such radicalism? 😉

Last week it was the 10th birthday of Songbird Wines and to celebrate we had a little party at the magnificent Westgate Towers, just a few hundred yards from where the business started (my old kitchen table). It was a wonderful evening and was a joy to be joined by so many that have been part of the Songbird adventure over past decade. We quaffed Kent's finest fizz - Pelegrim - which was drinking beautifully - and when we'd drunk all that we got stuck into Louro Godello, mags of OSA Maremma Rosso and a rather splendid double magnum of Beronia Reserva, kindly sent by - cheers mate 👍. What an interesting ten years it's been - Brexit, Pandemic, cost of living crisis - but Songbird Wines is as strong as ever, thanks to having great wines and great customers. And to those of you that couldn't make it last Thursday - I'd like to say a big thank you for your support! 🥂
Thanks to for helping me host such a memorable event.

Musar eat your heart out! I've been a fan of ever since winemaker Faouzi hosted my first Zoom tasting at the start of lockdown. That evening I recall being captivated by the winery's Cinsault but this Marquis des Beys takes their wines to another level. 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah and aged in a mix of old and new French oak this is jam packed with ripe brambly fruit without being a fruit bomb. Tannins are fresh but evident and the wine is just a superb example of what can be produced in the Bekaa valley. Just over £25 a bottle? That's a Bekaa Bargain and no mistake. Will be to order on website as soon as I decide whether to keep it all myself!

Now I someone that enjoys flavours from all around the world but occasionally it's nice to be a bit parochial. This afternoon I had the pleasure of some of Kent's finest asparagus, washed down with one of Kent's finest white wines whilst sat in a classic Kentish garden on a glorious English spring afternoon. These are moments to savour!

What a cracking bottle of Chardonnay tonight from Jura, a region I'm loving at the moment. This is toasty, ripe, citrusy with hints of hot cross bun and the classic struck swan vesta. Domaine du Pélican is owned by Burgundy's Marquis d'Angerville, who know a bit about wine making. Aged in foudre and totally delicious with a bit of skate from

Just for fun, how many albums can you name from the final pic?

Where did the week go? My inaugural visit to The Real Wine Fair on Monday was an absolute blast. So many exciting wines and a real education for old farts like me - you NEVER stop learning with wine.
Pet Nats galore, sparkling Demi-Sec Gamay and some seriously good skin contact whites - the world of wine has never had it so good! Plenty of cool catz in the vicinity too.
A few of my highlights pictured.

Ignore the 2018 Piemonte vintage at your peril! 2018 is sandwiched between the luscious and forward 2017s and the the classic, near perfect, 2019s. However, there are superb 2018s around like this gorgeous Barbaresco that will set you back only £40 a bottle. Get shopping!

Gordon's Wine Bar eh? I remember thinking it a total no no as a teenager in the '80s and then building up the courage to enter in the 90s, and what a discovery - it was all about Chilean Merlot, a cheese board & 20 Marlborough Lights back then, but we all change - luckily Gordon's hasn't too much. I do rue, however, the closure of the original entrance which, with its 'challenging' staircase, would be the decider if you would have one for the road or naff off to Charing Cross to head home with your tail (and probably head too) between your legs. Gordon's has reinvented itself brilliantly over the decades without losing its original charm and this bottle of Pinot Blanc consumed on Sunday night with a couple of old muckers was delicious.
I should also shout out the rather nice drop of Moulin et Vent at Le Beaujolais later that evening too!

When invited me to a dinner whilst cruising Regent's canal on the superb featuring one of Loire's finest, Domaine Vacheron, my immediate thought was - who's pulled out? This was closely followed by a reply of yes yes yes!
This historic Domaine is a leader in Sancerre of biodynamic & minimum intervention wine making and produce wine of pure class. Sauvignon Blanc isn't usually my first choice for white but I would reach for a bottle of these any day of the week. Wine of the night for me was the Les Romains from 70 year old vines - but it was a close call. They cultivate a damn good bunch of Pinot Noir too as their rose and red showed. Yet another superb night hosted by who excel at this educational but hugely enjoyable events. A big shout out to the London Shell Company for the superb food and outstanding service. Camden never looked so good!
Tuesdays don't get much better than this. Oh, and 2015 vintage Pol Roger was showing pretty well too!

The beautiful village of Porrera in its magical late evening beauty. On a Monday night you will find everyone has ventured to wine shop and bar. That's what I did and enjoyed this superb red from the very cool Les Rampoines. Needless to say it was delicious but I can't see me trying it again for sometime as it has an annual production of just 702 bottles! The jamon was pretty damn good too.

Loving the gentle aroma and perfumed fruit from this superb Rioja from Palacios Remendo. I was reminded of its brilliance at Best Of Rioja tasting so had to get some in and it's been a superb match to some Iberico presa. This wine is predominantly Garnacha so it's not your typical Rioja and 20% whole bunch fermentation gives it both perfume and lift. I love it and for not much more than £20 it's a bargain!
If I was really sharp I'd now say 'see bio to purchase on website', but I'm not so you'll just have to DM me instead. It really is very good and is a perfect match to Miles Davis.

A few highlights from last week's tastings in London. Very exciting to taste a 'white label edition' of one of the 2019 Crus from Produttori del Barbaresco along with delicious new Barolos from Oddero. Poire l'Histoire is a fab new Muscadet arriving very soon and is a great example of the renaissance happening to the favourite wine of '80s wine bars. Also was great to catch up with the constantly cheerful Gonzalo Amigo, along with brother Daniel, from Bodegas Madai. They make some super wines from Godello & Mencia and are well worth checking out. Came home with a serious case of 'tasting teeth' (you don't want to see a picture of them!).

Delicious drop of 'Midweek Meursault' tonight courtesy of - Bourgogne Côte d'Or, Cuvée des Forgets. From a couple of small vineyards just outside Meursault. Lovely citrus fruits, with a little smokiness and a creamy mineral finish. Plenty of life left in this and a bargain and just over 30 notes. Very nice.

Delicious low intervention Godello from based in Bierzo. Made from 100 year old Godello vines and fermented and aged for 6 months in foudres. I last tasted in the summer and it was a bit muted but now back to its vibrant best with a gorgeous pithy nose with flavours of lemon peel, stone fruit and a hint of mandarin. You get a lot of wine here for your 30 quid. A glass of this with some simple pintxos of toasted sourdough, tomato & Cantabrian anchovies and this Thursday evening is starting to look up. Dry January? No thanks.

A fantastic staff Christmas lunch with Team Songbird at the wonderful Pig at Bridge. No party hats but plenty of Christmas cheer plus loads of lovely wine but only got a picture of this stunning 2016 Brunello Riserva. Food and service was top notch as always - well done team Pig. On a day of atrocious weather I couldn't think of anywhere better to be.
Cheers fellas - we're almost at the final hurdle!

On what has been our busiest day of the year so far I feel it's time to introduce the boys in the band. On the left is the man that gets the wine to you - the legend that is Shaun; not only the best, but most certainly the most cheerful delivery driver you'll find. On the right is fella that makes sure you get the right wine, cellar manager Dan who many of you will know as - the classiest sign writer in this part of Kent and you can see his handy work all over Canterbury and beyond. He takes a couple of days off his artistic duties a week to be a valued member of Team Songbird. I'm lucky to have such a professional pair to help out today and the other busy days on the horizon.

Nothing does winter drinking in front of the fire like Red Burgundy. Fixin is the wise man's (or woman's) Gevrey Chambertin - especially from a great Domaine like Jean Tardy & Fils. I'm releasing a few bottles of this for sale at £55 a bottle - it's absolutely delicious.

Tree up, doesn't look anywhere near as impressive in the photo, wine's delicious though.
