Why use #decanter and when?
Decanting serves two purposes: when you need separate wine from sediment and to aerate wine.
Sediment is created by natural process when colour pigments and tannins bond together and fall out of solution. It normally sits on the bottom (or side) of the bottle, that’s why careful handling of your older bottle of wine or port before decanting is important. It’s good to leave it upright for 24 hours before pouring the wine into to the decanter slowly. If done too quickly you will end up stirring the sediment into your wine and your wine will appear cloudy with gritty texture. It’s not harmful but definitely less enjoyable.
Aeration will open up your wine and give it extra life. Especial younger, more vigorous and fuller bodied wines is good to decant at least one hour before drinking. With older wines it is very debatable and it’s more about personal preferences but generally if you decide decant them I would suggest max 1/2 hour or right before drinking.
You can find decent selection of decanters in any of our shops, please ask if need advice or more information about them.
PS: Attached video is not the ''book example'' and best way how to do it, but you must agree its hard to do it when you hold camera in one of your hands :)
