Cider Gifts at the ready.

Last Thursday was Apple Day, an annual celebration highlighting all that is good about orchards. Both a celebration and a demonstration of the varieties we are in danger of losing - not simply in apples themselves, but in the richness and diversity of landscape, ecology and culture too. Orchards are as much about community as apples. We were lucky enough to celebrate Apple Day with the wonderful Burrow Hill Somerset Cider Brandy who laid on amazing music, food, cider (of course), a Mummers play, book launch and displays on the orcharding families of nearby Kingsbury Episcopi through time.
pressing
This is the very essence of what we sell - it all starts with fresh-pressed apple juice. From all those lovely apples harvested in the orchards, they are first chopped and then pressed - traditionally done by a screw press in "cheeses" in cloth, and now by water or belt pressure. The aim is to get 70-75% by weight of lovely amber juice extracted. This is transferred as soon as possible to fermentation tanks, where the magic happens - more on that soon. Just enjoy the gently flowing juice as the starting point for now. Thanks to @Rosscider for showing us their incredible Hydropress machines.
Apple Harvesting
The earliest apples are being harvested, with many of the sweeter varieties ripe and ready now, and the more tannic apples over the next couple of months. Spare a thought for the cidermakers, who are out in the orchards come rain or shine harvesting their apples to make delicious craft cider for all of us to enjoy!
Tree Shaker
Ever seen a tree shaker in action? It's finally time to harvest the apples, and nothing does the job better than this impressive bit of machinery. It can shake over 200 trees per hour, and harvest around 150 tonnes of cider apples per day.
Herefordshire Orchards
Had a great time out in the sun visiting some producers in Herefordshire yesterday. The orchards are looking great!
Cider Salon 2021
We had a great time at Cider Salon on Saturday meeting lots of incredible producers and sampling their delicious wares! Thanks to @oliversciderandperry and @piltoncider for organising such a great event!
