Puglia is best known for good value everyday wines - hearty reds and crisp, sometimes aromatic whites, but there are hotspots of serious quality. Lesser known, over here at least, is Castel del Monte, which was amongst the region’s first DOCs and home to the Puglia’s only DOCG wines. This is a challenging place to grow vines: very dry and rocky with painfully shallow topsoils, but a little altitude, coastal breezes, and sea fogs definitely helps.

At the heart of the Castel del Monte DOC is the organically farmed Tenuta Bocca del Lupo estate, which the Tuscan-based Marchese Antinori created in 1998 as a foray into Italy’s southern reaches. It’s this estate that produces the outstanding Pietrabianca Chardonnay, highlighting the diversity and great potential of Puglia.

Pietrabianca is wonderfully elegant and refined, offers great intensity and complexity.

The new 2023 release will make a brilliant partner to the long, warm evenings ahead of us!

Kumeu Village Chardonnay 2023 is the perfect introduction to the world-class Kumeu River estate in New Zealand.

Delivering bright citrus, tropical and stone fruit notes on the palate, the tiny oak influence adds an excellent depth and texture, making it ideal as an aperitif or just on hand in the fridge when you’re looking for a tipple. Don’t let the reference to oak put you off, the result is a superbly balanced wine, with freshness and richness in abundance.

Sample the signature quality of Kumeu River in this Village Chardonnay but without the premium price tag of the top-tier wines. This is one of the easiest wine-buying decisions you’ll make all year.

Producers come a long way to visit Tanners HQ, and this week we were delighted to welcome Nicolas Sutil and Tomas Alonso of Sutil wines, Colchagua, Chile.

Sampling a range of varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and a rare Cabernet Franc we were reminded of the superb quality on offer from this outstanding region and producer.

Cherry blossom season has arrived, painting the landscape in delicate pink and white! This fleeting yet breathtaking spectacle is particularly famous in Japan, where ‘sakura’ season is celebrated with festivals, picnics and glasses of sake under the blooming trees.

While cherry trees are sometimes planted in vineyards as windbreaks and to encourage biodiversity, they are best known for their cultural significance and stunning visual appeal.

Luckily, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy the magic – Shropshire and The Marches offer wonderful spots to admire cherry blossoms in full bloom, from the riverside in Bridgnorth to Shrewsbury town centre or Ironbridge. But with the season lasting only a couple of weeks, the beauty is all too brief. If you miss the blossoms in nature, head to Wyle Cop, where our window display captures the spirit of the season just a little longer.

Slovenia might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of wine, but those from Doppler Winery are rapidly rising to the top of our most wanted list. This small, family-run winery spans 9 hectares in Northeast Slovenia and is led by Mihaela Kopse and her three daughters. Currently in organic conversion, Doppler produces beautifully pure wines, balancing international grape varieties with the region’s traditional ones.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of tasting through their range with Lina, who now oversees both winemaking and vineyard management. The line-up featured fresh vintages of the wines we already stock, along with some exciting new releases we hope to offer soon. Lina’s passion for the region and its wines was evident as she shared the stories behind each label – like the flour-dusted ‘S’ on their Sylvaner, a tribute to the baked goods their grandmother would bring them as children while they helped their grandfather in the vineyards.

If you haven’t yet tried these wines, we highly recommend you do. They’re a true expression of passion, precision and purity.

Only a handful of wines have the claim to fame of being included in a national anthem as well as being the favoured drink of monarchs and emperors. Tokaji is one of them.

The Hungarian sweet wines of the Tokaj region express themselves as pure nectar. Some of the most complex and rare wines are the Essencia wines. These low production wines are drawn 100% from botrytised fruit (noble rot) delivering rich flavours of candied apricot and manuka honey whilst still maintaining essential acidity for any balanced sweet wine.

This week we dropped into Glaziers Hall in London where Italian agents DBG italia were showcasing the stellar 2021 vintage of Barolos. Tasting the range of producers on offer, it’s easy to see why the 2021 vintage is causing such a stir, so keep an eye out for the release of our Piedmont and beyond offer in the near future.

The epitome of quality and value, whether you’re looking to pick up a bottle to enjoy over the weekend, need a superb food-match or require a crowd-pleasing bottle or two, then the Tanners own labels are just for you.

🍷 Why are the own labels so well-loved?
Purely and simply, there’s no fuss and there are no hidden surprises. You don’t have to know the name of the Château, the vineyard or even vintage nuances, which makes this range incredibly accessible.

🍷🥃 Who makes the wine & spirits?
Established in 1842, it’s fair to say that we know and work with fantastic producers around the world. As a merchant, Tanners doesn’t have vineyards but luckily we know people who do. Given our connections, it’s only natural to entrust those at the top of their game with creating the Tanners own label range.

🍷 🍽️ 🥂 From mid-week meals to parties
The Tanners own label wines are fit for all occasions. Whether you’re looking to stock up your supplies, if you need a top-value gift, or perhaps need to cater for dinners or parties, whatever the celebration, the own-label range is your first port of call.

Celebrating International Syrah Day 🍷 🍇

One of the most successful variety worldwide, Syrah or Shiraz (they are the same) produces world-class wines in many corners of the globe.

You’ll typically find a streak of black pepper and a damson-fruited core, it’s a grape that lasts well, taking on complexity with age.
Australian Shiraz can have a eucalyptus note, or a minty character on the palate. You’ll encounter great wines from the Rhône Valley, Languedoc, South Africa, Chile and California in particular, but Syrah is a well-travelled variety and well-worth exploring across the wine world.

Delighted to have had the charismatic Andrew Graham-Dixon speak last night at Tanners. As well as looking at the great artists work, he taught us a lot about Caravaggio’s turbulent life, esteemed patrons and why an artist from Milan should never order artichokes in olive oil from restaurant in Rome! With a full house, a wonderful evening was had by all which included a fizz reception, a book signing and a fork buffet supper.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the opening of the Gonzalez Byass UK office, many from the wine trade were invited to Savoy Place for a portfolio tasting, including Graham Mason from Tanners Fine Wine Team.

There were many highlights, but for Graham, the standout wines came from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, and he had the pleasure of meeting Olivier Humbrecht MW in person. He also bumped into an old friend of Tanners, Oz Clarke!
