Puglia is best known for good value everyday wines - hearty reds and crisp, sometimes aromatic whites, but there are hotspots of serious quality. Lesser known, over here at least, is Castel del Monte, which was amongst the region’s first DOCs and home to the Puglia’s only DOCG wines. This is a challenging place to grow vines: very dry and rocky with painfully shallow topsoils, but a little altitude, coastal breezes, and sea fogs definitely helps.
At the heart of the Castel del Monte DOC is the organically farmed Tenuta Bocca del Lupo estate, which the Tuscan-based Marchese Antinori created in 1998 as a foray into Italy’s southern reaches. It’s this estate that produces the outstanding Pietrabianca Chardonnay, highlighting the diversity and great potential of Puglia.
Pietrabianca is wonderfully elegant and refined, offers great intensity and complexity.
The new 2023 release will make a brilliant partner to the long, warm evenings ahead of us!
