🍇 Celebrate International Syrah Day with our Stylish Syrah Duo Pack! 🍇
Syrah, Not Shiraz: Same Grape, Less Drama. International Syrah Day is just around the corner, and that’s all the excuse we need to celebrate the fantastic range of Syrahs we’ve got on our shelves. But before we get carried away, let’s clear something up: Syrah and Shiraz—same grape, different styles. Shiraz tends to bring the bold, fruit-packed energy we often associate with Australia, while Syrah takes a more refined, elegant, and savoury approach. For International Syrah Day, we’re focusing firmly on Syrah.
This two-bottle set gives you a glimpse into two different sides of the grape. First, a northern Rhône Syrah, where it all began. This one’s fresh, silky, and approachable, showing off the classic northern Rhône sophistication in an easy-drinking style. Then, for contrast, we’ve added a South African ‘Old School’ Syrah. What I’m drinking right now is Judith Beck’s Ink - and yes, it’s as inky as the squid on the label suggests, at least in colour. But it’s lighter on the tongue than you might think, with loads of juicy berry fruit, a touch of herbs and spice, and a lovely crisp finish. Authentically Austrian there’s enough depth for it to feel right for a chilly February, and paired with a simple roast chicken, it’s absolutely spot on.

I love digging into the lesser-known wines on our shelves because, more often than not, they’re seriously good value for money. Ciu Ciu Rosso Piceno is a perfect example. It’s from Marche, not Tuscany, but with its Montepulciano and Sangiovese blend, you’d be hard-pressed to spot the difference. Generous, juicy, and totally unpretentious — it’s the kind of bottle you crack open midweek and instantly feel smug about. Oh, and if you’re wondering how to say it? Just think of a steam train: Choo-Choo! You won’t forget it… or regret it.

Forget Dry January - I’m firmly in the Try January camp, and my go-to bottle this month is the Bodegas Altolandon ‘Mil Historias’ Malbec. Malbec from Spain? You don’t see that every day — it’s usually an Argentinian affair — but that’s exactly what makes this one so intriguing. Altolandon is one of the most passionate organic producers in Manchuela, and this bold, brooding red is packed with dark fruit and a touch of spice. It’s got just the right warmth to see me through these chilly January nights. Full throttle, no holding back — just how I like it.

Located in Hampton Hill, near Twickenham and Kingston, in West London, we are an independent wine merchant, bottled beer and artisan spirit specialist. We’ve been going for over 14 years now and have over 1100 wines, 400 beers, and 200 spirits in stock. We always have at least 16 wines open to taste in store as well as a large number of spirits and also offer a click-and-collect service as well as local and national delivery. Winner of the International Wine Challenge 2019 Best London Wine Merchant and also of the Decanter Retailer Awards Best London Neighbourhood Wine Shop 2018 and 2019.
