Alfrocheiro’s not a grape I’ve come across much, so I was keen to give this one a whirl. It’s a uniquely Portuguese variety, mostly grown in the hot, dry Alentejo region – the land of cork oak trees and big horizons.
Interestingly, it’s related to Pinot Noir, and you can tell by the lovely dark cherry aromas that come through. It’s got that same lightness, but with a bit more backbone. If you fancy a red that’s not too heavy but still delivers plenty of flavour, this is just the ticket. I paired it with roast chicken, and it worked a treat – not overpowering, just a smooth, easy-drinker.

Alter Ribeiro Blanco is a bit of a hidden gem, hailing from Ribeiro, a lesser-known spot that neighbours the more famous Rias Baixas in Galicia. The two areas have their similarities, but Ribeiro wines like this tend to have a bit more body and richness thanks to the warmer inland climate.
This one’s a good example of that. Elegantly aromatic, it’s got a decent bit of oomph and a lovely hint of peachiness to it. What I like most is how well-balanced it is - not too sharp, not too sweet. It’s perfect when you fancy something easy-going, having a quiet evening in just watching telly.

Located in Hampton Hill, near Twickenham and Kingston, in West London, we are an independent wine merchant, bottled beer and artisan spirit specialist. We’ve been going for over 14 years now and have over 1100 wines, 400 beers, and 200 spirits in stock. We always have at least 16 wines open to taste in store as well as a large number of spirits and also offer a click-and-collect service as well as local and national delivery. Winner of the International Wine Challenge 2019 Best London Wine Merchant and also of the Decanter Retailer Awards Best London Neighbourhood Wine Shop 2018 and 2019.
