TIME TO CELEBRATE AT LAST! The 2022 Army Air Corps Sports Awards at AAC HQ last week finally burst the Covid Bubble and celebrated two years' worth of phenomenal sporting achievements by the Army Air Corp's finest. Presentations were made to the winners by the truly inspiring Olympic Gold Medallist Amy WilliamsMBE, who won gold in the Skeleton in Vancouver 2010 - the first Briton to win a Winter Games Gold for 30 years. It was a great honour too for The Official Military Beer Co. who marked yet another milestone in its mission to ‘raise funds by raising toasts’ with its Official AAC craft beers - Air Trooper IPA and Hedge Hopper Pilsner. The Official Military Beer Co’s Pints with Purpose donation was the final presentation of the evening and was made by Andrew McMorran, CEO, The Official Military Beer Co. to Colonel Julian Facer, Corps Col. Army Air Corps who received the donation on behalf of the Corps charity.

Speaking at the dinner, Andrew explained “We call our craft beers ‘Pints with Purpose’, because they do double duty. Firstly, they taste great and are a joy to drink. But then, beyond the bar, long after that smile of the first sip has faded, each beer then goes on to help a soldier in need. For every bottle or pint we sell, we donate 20% of our margin to the Corps charity to help wounded soldiers enjoy sport that helps them recover from their injuries. That’s why we call them Pints with Purpose - they taste good, they look good and they do good”.

The Official Military Beer Co. creates the official beers of a great many of the British Army’s famous regiments and corps including The Royal Artillery, The Royal Signals, The Royal Engineers, The REME and The King’s Royal Hussars. These official beers and ciders are available in all good mess bars across the UK and overseas and to anyone who enjoys a good pint from the OMBC shop online at www.officialmilitarybeer.co.uk.

FANCY A BIT OF FUN?
This year more people than ever are giving up their usual Tipple for January. Even, date we say, our Official Military Beers. A huge 19% of Brits (up from 13% last year) are on a break from booze this month to rebalance their lives. And we’re ‘Officially’ in favour of all things in moderation.

Repeated lockdowns followed by Christmas and New Year have given us all plenty of reasons to either ease the boredom or raise a toast. It’s no real hardship and besides what’s another 20 days without a beer?!

But if Dry January is proving a bit dull and you’re been looking for a little distraction to pass 5 or 10 minutes, you might find this cute little word game a bit of fun! ‘It’s called ‘WORDLE’

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

is a small world-wide phenomenon that’s sweeping the internet. It’s free to play with 6 chances to guess a 5 letter word. Just one new word each day. Sounds simple? Then give it a go and see. It’s fun and it’s easy to share how clever you are 😉. But be warned - it’s addictive!!

Pass it on and share the fun!

Guess the hidden word in 6 tries. A new puzzle is available each day.

THREE CHEERS! 🍺🍺🍺 to 58 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers! These expert Bomb Disposal specialists have had a busy 12 months helping dispose of another threat - Covid-19! The 'Always-On' team of 58 Squadron spent Christmas Day working. But they did find time for a bit of fun and sent us these pics. Of course, we were only too happy to help raise a few smiles by donating some Official Military Beer Gift Boxes containing their favourite tipples - Pin In IPA, Pin In Pilsner and Shootbolt Cider. It's a honour to stand by those who stand by us! Let's hear it for the brave men and women of Royal Engineers 58 Squadron and all those members of our armed services who spent Christmas keeping us safe!

Well, this was a special moment! / (the military charity) are supporting the Antarctic Quest 21, an expedition to the south pole, following in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton on the centenary of his final expedition. But this is no ordinary adventure - their mission: to restore sensors and collect ice samples from The Forbidden Plateau for world scientists to better monitor climate change. This remarkably brave team comprises snow and polar experts from the Royal Navy and British Army so, as a charity trustee, I popped along to meet this extraordinary bunch at the launch. The impromptu auction of a super watch (generously donated by co-sponsor )was inexplicably 'won' by your truly and presented by EB's wonderful Gemma Parker. I'll no longer have an excuse for being late - even at 50m!

THE REASON WE WEAR A POPPY
The story of The Unknown Warrior.

On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefield cemeteries at Ypres, Arras, the Aisne and the Somme.

None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why.

The bodies were taken by field ambulance to GHQ at St-Pol-Sur-Ter Noise. Once there, the bodies were draped with the union flag.

Sentries were posted and Brigadier-General Wyatt and a Colonel Gell selected one body at random. The other three were reburied.

A French Honour Guard was selected and stood by the coffin of the chosen soldier overnight.

On the morning of the 8th November, a specially designed coffin made of oak from the grounds of Hampton Court arrived and the Unknown Warrior was placed inside.

On top was placed a crusaders sword and a shield on which was inscribed:

"A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country".

On the 9th of November, the Unknown Warrior was taken by horse-drawn carriage through Guards of Honour and the sound of tolling bells and bugle calls to the quayside.

There, he was saluted by Marechal Foch and loaded onto HMS Verdun bound for Dover. The coffin stood on the deck covered in wreaths, surrounded by the French Honour Guard.

Upon arrival at Dover, the Unknown Warrior was met with a nineteen gun salute - something that was normally only reserved for Field Marshals.

A special train had been arranged and he was then conveyed to Victoria Station, London.

He remained there overnight, and, on the morning of the 11th of November, he was finally taken to Westminster Abbey.

The idea of the unknown warrior was thought of by a Padre called David Railton who had served on the front line during the Great War the union flag he had used as an altar cloth whilst at the front, was the one that had been draped over the coffin.

It was his intention that all of the relatives of the 517,773 combatants whose bodies had not been identified could believe that the Unknown Warrior could very well be their lost husband, father, brother or son...

THIS is the reason we wear poppies.

We do not glorify war.

We remember - with humility - the great and the ultimate sacrifices that were made, not just in this war, but in every war and conflict where our service personnel have fought - to ensure the liberty and freedoms that we now take for granted.

Every year, on the 11th of November, we remember.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
