💡If you’ve secretly been under the impression that orange wine is simply ‘wine’ made by swapping the grapes for a new fruit 🍊…. you’re not alone! We hear this all the time at tastings 😂 so as summer approaches let us lift the veil on this one! 👎 💡SO what is Orange wine? 🧡It may sound like new ‘fad’ but in fact it represents the grassroots of traditional winemaking! Let us break it down for you… 🧡Wine is made from grapes (do we still have you 😉). Grapes have skins and then the juicy inside part is called the ‘pulp’. 🧡When you pick up a glass of deeply coloured ‘red wine’ that inky hue comes from the pigment in the SKINS. 🧡White wines are near colourless because when the grapes are picked they are quickly pressed and the juice is removed from the skins to keep them clear and bright! 🧡SO what happens when you let the pulp/juice hang out with the grape skins for a little while (the same way that a red wine does)? 🧡VOILA you guessed it! The wine takes on an orange hue and a whole new array of flavours and you get an ‘orange wine’. 😋What does it taste like? 👉The grape skins and typically ‘lower intervention’ winemaking give these wine a whole new array of flavours! 👉Ironically you will often get flavours of orange peel🍊, spice🌶, honey 🍯 and nutty 🌰notes! 🍽These wines are truly amazing food pairings especially with flavour packed Thai dishes, wash rind cheese and charcuterie!
