🍷Crondall Stores Wines of the week 🍾

We are pleased to bring you two really well regarded wines from south-eastern Sicily as our wines of the week. The white is an innovative and award winning blend of the indigenous Grillo grape with the archetypal French Viognier. Crisp and dry, it is a great alternative to a sauvignon or pinot blanc. The red also uses an Indigenous grape, Frappato. Described in Decanter magazine as ‘the perfect summer red’ and a Joanna Simon ‘wine of the week’, it is light and fruity and goes equally well with meat and fish. You can also serve it slighty chilled! Two great wines to sip this weekend.

🍷2022 Santa Tresa 'Rina Russa' Frappato

A Joanna Simon wine of the week and awarded 92 Points by Decanter who describe it as the perfect summer red, this is a different Sicilian red. The Frappato grape is indigenous to south-eastern Sicily.
Santa Tresa offers roots back back to 1697, but it was only in the early 1990s that siblings, Stefano and Marina Girelli, wine entrepreneurs from Trentino in Northern Italy, discovered these clandestine vineyards near Vittoria, Sicily. 2001 saw sister and brother purchasing the winery, an exciting milestone for Santa Tresa’s history. Immediately they embarked on an expansive renovation project, overhauling the entire estate which now crafts vibrant, pure, and exciting wines from native grapes such as Grillo, Frappato, and Nero d’Avola.

Tasting Notes:
Rina Russa genuinely has its own unique style, as the Frappato grapes come from ancient clones developed on our own estate. It has a very beautiful light cherry colour, with a fresh and vibrant bouquet, reminiscent of wild strawberries and a beautifully balanced palate, with silky smooth fruit, a real freshness running through it and a surprisingly long finish.
Food Pairings in Crondall Stores:
Rina Russa is a red wine in a class of its own and with its extraordinary fruitiness, it is a red wine which tradition dictates should be drunk with fish. Among those perfect matches are several traditional dishes from typical of Ragusa – tuna, sword fish, blue fish. A really versatile red, best served at room temperature (18-20°C) with cured meats and cheeses, but with fish, serve at around 14-16°C.

🍷 2022 Santa Tresa Grillo Viognier

This innovative wine is award-winning in international competitions, demonstrating that while Sicily is known as a red wine producing region, it also makes fantastic white wines. ��An unusual blend of Grillo, an excellent indigenous Sicilian grape variety, with the French Viognier, which enjoys perfect growing conditions at Santa Tresa. ��Santa Tresa is situated in the commune of Vittoria, in the south-east of Sicily, at 24 metres above sea level. The estate covers 50 hectares, 39 of which are vineyards.

GRAPE A blend of 70% Grillo and 30% Viognier
STYLE Crisp, dry white
ABV 13.5%
COUNTRY Sicily, Italy

Tasting Notes:
The minerality and freshness of the Grillo is perfectly complemented by the intensity and body of the Viognier. Straw yellow in colour, it has a bouquet layered with white fruits such as peaches, which gradually develop into notes of apricots and herbs. On the palate, is has a wonderful minerality, it is well balanced with a lovely softness on the finish.
Food Pairings in Crondall Stores:
This wine is the perfect accompaniment to seafood antipasti, shellfish, and pasta or risotto made with fish or vegetables. Also perfect with cured meats. Best served at 10-12°C.

Welcome to our latest Crondall Stores Wines of the Week. We are pleased to bring back a red wine that was very popular last year, the excellent and bold Melnik 55 from Bulgaria. There is a rumour of sunshine this weekend – only a rumour mind you! – and this wine would go very well with a BBQ. We have a new white wine to try from the Vouvray region of France, famous for its’ Chenin Blanc grapes. The tasting notes describe it as ‘succulent, textural and complex. There’s only one way to find out!


🍷2022 Logodaj Melnik 22
The return of a favourite, a bonkers red from Bulgaria that was reputedly a favourite of Winston Churchill.
Logodaj Winery, establish in 1994, is located in the very heart of the beautiful valley along the Struma River in South Western Bulgaria. Their practices are directed by the nature of each vintage, hand-harvesting only when the grapes are fully ripe, the grapes of the individual vineyards fermented separately in respect and emphasis of the unique terroir. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks with 12 months' ageing in a combination of used small French oak 225-litre barriques and big 2-tonnes Slavonian oak barrels where the wine also undergoes malolactic fermentation.

COUNTRY Thracian Valley, Bulgaria

—Tasting Notes:—
A bright ruby liquid with purple hues, this wine has intense fruity aromas of cherries, wild herbs and delicate vanilla. It's well-balanced, medium-to-full bodied and very easy to drink. Rich and savoury with additional notes of to***co and red pepper, juicy acidity and a long finish.
Food Pairings in Crondall Stores:
If the sun is shining (or you just feel the need to light a fire) this is a great BBQ wine. Otherwise, a good partner for any red meat or game. Can’t promise Wild Boar but come and check out our Smallbones sausages.

🍷2021 Deniche Vouvray

This Vouvray is a Silver Medal Winner in the 2023 Decanter World Wines Awards. Selected from vines which lie on the higher plateaus of the Vouvray appellation. The grapes are harvested early in the day, before the sun has time to heat up the vines; this is essential in order to keep the bright, fresh character that one looks for in a sweeter style of Vouvray. The wine is kept on fine lees in cool cellars that are hollowed into the chalky rock strata, thus optimising both freshness and complexity.

COUNTRY Loire Valley, France

—Tasting Notes:—
The purity and freshness of flavour is key to this wine as is the balance between the natural acidity and natural sugar. This succulent, textural, complex wine has notes of apple tart and quince jelly, which combine beautifully with pear and vanilla, leading to a delicious, candied peel finish.
Food Pairings in Crondall Stores:
A flexible, medium-dry food wine to enjoy with white meats, seafood or a large selection of cheeses. We particularly recommend trying with baked Tunworth cheese with crispy lardons and toasted garlic bread. Delicious.

Wines of the week Christmas Special 🎄🤶 We are pleased to bring you two wines to enjoy during the festive period. A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from highly regarded producer, Paddy Borthwick, that is a great aperitif and also a perfect accompaniment your Christmas lunch starter. And if you want to try something a little different with the turkey, we have our Austrian Zweigelt. Similar to a Pinot Noir, it a soft fruity medium bodied red.’ 🍷 2022 Paddy Borthwick Sauvignon Blanc It took nearly 10 years for Paddy Borthwick to convert part of his family’s sheep and cattle station in Wairarapa, in the south of New Zealand’s North Island, into a wine estate. He was convinced that an old, stony river terrace with free-draining alluvial soil and a unique micro-climate was perfect for growing premium wine grapes. After years of studying and winemaking experiences abroad, Paddy Borthwick returned to Wairarapa and began planting vines in 1996. A firm believer in sustainable agriculture, and with a relatively hands-off approach in the vineyard and winery, he crafts lively, tense and incredibly precise wines. GRAPE Sauvignon Blanc STYLE Dry white ABV 13% COUNTRY Wairarapa, New Zealand Tasting Notes: The 2022 growing season has produced a wine with great concentration. A fragrant lift of spiced stone fruit, tropical fruits with a hint of dark herb notes. Packed with flavour, a core of ripe nectarine and lemon-lime acidity, finishing with a great length of flavour. Wines of the week - 19 It's wet and windy outside, so how about a couple of wines to bring back memories of summer sunshine? Our wines of the week are from sun-kissed Italian vineyards. We are pleased to bring you a fresh white Frascati Superiore and another superb example of a big red Primitivo. 🍷2021 Frascati Superiore Organic Racemo Frascati is an appellation for dry, still and sparkling white wines produced just south of Rome, in central Italy. It is arguably the most famous wine (of either colour) produced anywhere in the Lazio region and has a heritage dating back many centuries. Its status as a geographical deisgnation (or appellation) was established in 1966. L'Olivella was founded in 1986 by expert viticulturist Umberto Notarnicola and wine expert from Piedmont, Bruno Violo. The winery is young, dynamic with a focus on sustainable agricultural practices. Volcanic soils from the region are rich in desirable minerals which help vine development and contribute depth and complexity to the wines. GRAPE Malvasia, Bellone, Grechetto STYLE Dry white ABV 12.5% COUNTRY Lazio, Italy Tasting Notes: Golden straw colour, with fresh and floral aromas on the nose with notes of white flowers, citrus peel and a touch of almond nuttiness. It's juicy in the mouth with flavours of white peach, nuts and zesty acidity which leads into an aromatic finish.
