Tom Sanders gets full credit for this base I’m preparing for my B-17 model, both for the art deco electric fan base idea as well as paint scheme- I think it turned out pretty ok.

On the rough underside I’ve started with a rough single cut file to get it fsirly flat and remove most of the air bubbles. A small pin file set from the local surplus store for small radii around engine nacelles ($5) after that and then rough sandpaper next. Then, reassess to see what csn still be filed/sanded out and repeat.

Test mounting. Lots of shaping/sanding still to go of course. Spare stand I picked up and cleaned up in background at an antique fair. Its cast iron, so not as amenable to polishing as this aluminum one.

The nose seems to have been tacked on as an afterthought and is not quite right for the correct profile. Here I have blended in the seem with handfile and rough sanded w 100 grit. Next, I will make the upper part of the nose a little more conical, in the shape of B-17 perspex nose cone.

No amount of sandpaper was going to take out some of these deep casting lines like the one on the right side of the fuselage, so I start with a single-cut handfile to rough out any major imperfections and deep recesses. I suppose you could also use an air grinder but one little slip, and you can do more harm than good. Here, I’ve managed to remove the worst of the longitudinal “fault line” with file pictured. My dad was an old school machinist and one of his apprenticeship projects was having to handfile a chunk of steel into a perfect square- I can’t help but think he’d be tickled to see me wittling away at a chunk of aluminum…

Our Story

You can read more about airplane ashtrays by visiting my website at canadianaerospace.weebly.com. Are you looking to sell, purchase or repair an airplane ashtray or looking for information about one that you own? Connect with airplane ashtray collectors on this page. We buy and sell collections as well. Looking for a unique gift for an aviation enthusiast-call today!

I created this FB page to connect collectors of these popular promotional items of the 50’s 60’s and 70’s (after that, they kind of went downhill in my opinion) and to showcase ones that I like both from my own collection and others-feel free to send photos of yours and maybe we’ll post it. You can reach me at [email protected] with any airplane ashtray related question.
