Last November 20th, Siniloan Integrated National High School in Siniloan ,Laguna hosted a successful National Rice Awareness Month celebration! Two hundred students, along with Mayor Patrick Elis Z.Go,MAO Carlo L. Realeza and representatives from the Department of Agriculture (DA)Calabarzon, PhilRice Los Banos,Laguna, and ATI Calabarzon , participated in a day filled with engaging activities designed to highlight the importance of rice in the Philippines.
The event wasn't just a celebration; it was an educational journey! Students expanded their knowledge through:
- Rice Trivia Bonanza: A lively quiz tested students' knowledge of rice facts, from its history and cultural significance to its nutritional value.
- Rice Production Deep Dive: Experts provided insights into modern rice farming techniques, explaining the entire process from planting to harvest. The discussion included the latest machinery used to improve efficiency and yield.
- "Be Rice Responsible" (ABKD): This session used the memorable acronym ABKD—Adlay, Saba, Kamote, at Saging (Adlay, Banana, Sweet Potato, and Banana) ay ihalo sa kanin (should be mixed with rice); Brown rice ay dapat nating kainin (we should eat); Kanin ay huwag natin sayangin (let's not waste rice); Dapat bigas ng Pilipinas ang ating bilhin (we should buy Philippine rice)—to promote healthy eating habits and support local farmers. The catchy phrases emphasized diversifying diets with nutritious alternatives, choosing healthier brown rice, reducing food waste, and prioritizing locally grown rice.
- Career Coaching in Agriculture: Students explored exciting career paths within the agriculture sector, learning about the various opportunities available in this vital industry.
The event was led by key figures in the agricultural sector: Regional Director Fidel Libao of DA RFO Calabarzon, Director Rhemilym Z. Relado of PhilRice Los Baños, Laguna, and ATI Center Director Representative MS.Grace Laydia.Their presence and expertise added significant value to the day's activities.
The day was a blend of fun and learning, leaving the students with a deeper understanding of rice cultivation, its impact on the economy, and the promising career prospects in the agricultural field. The event successfully promoted rice awareness and inspired the next generation of agricultural leaders.
