20 years ago, a lightbulb moment resulted in the creation of RedHeads by Tony Laithwaite. It was a no-gimmicks, no-rules cellar where young, talented (and rebellious) winemakers could moonlight and make small-batch wines that really rocked their boat. Growers started bringing in pick-up loads of their best grapes they wanted 'rescuing' from the mega-blends.
RedHeads winemakers began to gain a reputation as the ‘Robinhood of grapes’ – saving parcels to make into handcrafted wines. So popular, the cellar outgrew its original home and, for a few years, it moved from shed to shed. Finally it bought its own vineyard and built a state-of-the-art, off-grid, solar-powered eco winery. We're proud to say that the same goes on today in the Barossa Valley RedHeads winemaking studio. RedHeads by name, green by nature, with awards galore.

Laithwaite’s Wine People’s Story
My own affair with the wonderful world of wine began in Bordeaux, in the Summer of Love. My first job in the industry was sticking labels on bottles of Claret ... Today, Australia is one of the most exciting places to enjoy wine in the world — and I'm delighted (and grateful) that Aussie wine lovers are choosing Laithwaite's Wine to bring them the best from the Barossa Valley to McLaren Vale, France, Italy and beyond.
As a student I spent my summers working in the Bordeaux vineyards — lugging the local wine home on the train for a few family friends. Then in 1969 I bought a Ford van in order to bring real wines — wines of authenticity and character and directly to customers in the UK.
Called 'Bordeaux Direct', the original business had just five wines on the list and only 150 customers. But slowly we began investigating vineyards further up the Dordogne river... and beyond.
In the 1970's we were the first merchants — of any nationality — to prospect and buy wine from the wine regions of southern France ... Bergerac, Duras, Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and so on eastwards. Then came other countries; Rioja, Bulgarian Cabernet, even wines from Australia that were first shipped in 1974.
Bordeaux Direct was unique for only selling wines bottled by the producers; because they simply had more flavour, extra character, total authenticity and somehow anyone, even a newcomer to wine, could always taste that quality and goodness. Today ... over 40 years on, we're now called Laithwaite's Wine and deliver wine to over 700,000 customers in the UK, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the US and New Zealand. We may be bigger, but we still go 'direct' in the same old way, and so keep costs down.
We have a huge network of supplier contacts, some now the grandchildren of those we started with. We still only do top-quality, small production wines from producers in every corner of the known wine world. We are still travelling, still searching out the really good wines.
