Carema is a tiny, Nebbiolo specialist appellation found on the border of Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. It is home to a unique bio-type of the grape called Picotendro (or Picotener) which is planted to stone pergolas across 20 hectares of UNESCO listed terraces. Visiting Carema, both in person, and through drinking their wines, is a pilgrimage that every Nebbiolo-lover should make.

is a group of Nebbiolo artisans and the heart and soul of the appellation. Their wines are ethereal with heady aromatics (look for wild herbs, orange peel and fennel), brisk acidity and a haunting orange-tinged colour. If your Nebbiolo reference is Barolo, then these are to be understood differently, with a focus on levity, prettiness and fine acid for structure. They are a very different face of the grape variety and testament to Nebbiolo’s magic. Their annual limited release is one of our favourites and the wines have the Carema hallmarks of perfume and elegance.

L’Erta di Radda’s profound-yet-fresh wines rank in the upper echelons of Chianti Classico. Their 2021s are outstanding and amongst the finest of the vintage – Do not miss out.

Our allocation of the Riserva is almost done but we have enough Classico for the minute. Whether you want to open them now (decant) or cellar them for 10+ years, these wines have all the muscle, finesse and balance for the job.

Laura and her partner Federico concentrate on low yields from Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave, with winemaking inspired by a respect for their precious terroir and heritage. Laura makes some wonderfully contrasting wines: from ‘Libertate’, which is terracotta amphora raised Trebbiano di Soave, to ‘Vigneto Sengialta’, a cru bottling of old vine Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave aged on lees in 20 hectolitre ‘botti’. Balestri Valda’s wines are alive, textured and pure.

“Spicy and floral, the 2020 Soave Classico Sengialta opens in the glass with an inviting blend of crushed apples, crystalized ginger and sweet smoke. This is silky and round, nearly opulent in feel, with a core of saline minerals and brisk acids to balance. A salty flourish punctuates the finish, along with hints of lime, creating a savory yet still remarkably fresh impression. Outstanding purity and poise mixed with ripe fruit make the Sengialta a pleasure to taste.”

Grignolino’s home is in the beautiful Monferrato hills around Asti in Piedmont. Light in body and colour, Grignolino wines are taut and invigorating, full of aroma and flavour with vivid acidity and wonderfully grippy tannin. Think Nebbiolo but lighter and with more pep in its step. Wild strawberry rather than cherry with white peppercorn and herbs. It is so…Piemontese.
