A little charm to brighten your day?

The well-known plot of Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes" truly comes to life in the hands of Camille & Guillaume Boillot. They have finessed the Chardonnay grape in a way combining new and old traditions to elevate a style beyond comprehension.

May Producer - Camille & Guillaume Boillot 🌱

Presenting articulated and modern wines of the new Burgundy era, Camille & Guillaume Boillot are cultivating a strong collection of plots across Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Pommard. Born from a determination to present their own version of Burgundy wine, this new venture began in the 2022 vintage.

We are truly honoured to be offering such incredible wines from a new producer to our Le Club members this May.

💎When are you next pouring yourself a glass of Meursault "Vireuils"?
We have indulged our Le Club members with a bottle of Roulot 2021 to enjoy at their next very special occasion.

✨️A staple of every Domaine Roulot vintage...

"The 2021 Meursault Village has a lively, minerally, almost flinty bouquet that is beautifully focused. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, almost steely with a vigorous and persistent, saline finish. This is excellent and punches above its weight. Bravo."
Neal Martin, Vinous

The master strikes again in 2021!

What a ride it’s been from the heavy frost that decimated the vineyard and potential crop in April 2021 with loss of about 65% at Roulot, to create a tensile, focused, and finessed vintage in bottle. Sorting has been key to keeping the quality high, but generally, it remained a cooler vintage, with harvest taking place from mid-September (15 to 20 days later than 2020).

The 2021s have grown into vivid Burgundies, and they’ll provide lots of joy from this famed address for our Le Club Members this April.

"Billaud's 2021 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses derives from 60-year-old vines in the heart of the climat, and they have turned in a compelling performance this year, delivering a wine of lovely aromatic range that evokes sweet citrus oil, crisp stone fruit and white flowers." 93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate.

"The 2021 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet that gradually unveils Granny Smith apples, sea cave and faint tertiary scents, very pure and delineated. The palate is beautifully balanced. Stunning Chablis ahoy!" 96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous.

With only 300 bottles of the Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos made in 2021 it is a true honour to have the chance to provide Le Club members with this special cuvee in such a small vintage.

"The wine has turned out superbly, mingling aromas of citrus zest, clear honey, white flowers, wet stones, freshly baked bread and iodine in a classically Chablisien bouquet."
95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate.

Champagne Region Spotlight 🍾

As with Burgundy, Champagne has a long and rich history. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era there are records of domestic vines in the 1st century AD, and as the Romans and Gaul traded in wine, towards the 5th century it became a true symbol of the kings. Initially as a still wine, evolving into its sparkling version it was present at every coronation of the king since and deemed “the wine of the Kings and King of the wines”, setting the region up with a prestigious reputation it still holds today.

The soils and subsoils of Champagne have a heavy influence on the resultant wine, as the producers hold a similar focus of Burgundy producers. Majority of the soil across the region is limestone, consisting of chalk, marl, and limestone proper, perfect for the creation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in sparkling form.

Champagne, the northern neighbour of Burgundy is a true testament to high quality wines governed by strict regulations to ensure the region maintains its unparalleled status for centuries to come.

The flavours attack with a beautiful minerality...

From one of the largest and most famed Premier Cru plots in Meursault, this "Les Charmes-Dessus” is located on the upper part of the climat and reflects the pure essence of the appellation. Being located on a gentle slope at the bottom of the Cote d'Or escarpment it is not as steep as others, allowing for the vines to be exposed to the morning sunlight as well as sheltered from the brighter afternoon sun.

🌱A Village status by name, a Premier Cru by quality...

In Vosne-Romanée, Pierre Girardin works hard cultivating these vines that sit upon a steep incline of limestone. Purchasing the resulting grapes he produces a cuvee of good concentration of pure fruit. 💎

Exclusive to Members this year, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 🍷

🗒️The 2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the more reserved wines in the cellar this year, unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries, peonies, sweet spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with powdery tannins and good tension, it will merit a bit of patience.
91-93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate.

It all starts here for the Trois Glorieuses de Bourgogne...

Deemed the most famous Burgundy wine festival alongside the Saint-Vincent Tournante, the Trois Glorieuses is held on the third weekend of November every year across the Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Burgundy plays host to three major events for the weekend beginning with a black-tie dinner at the Château du Clos du Vougeot. Followed on by the Hospices de Beaune wine auction and La Paulée de Meursault.
A truly momentous occasion in the Burgundy calendar!

October Producer - Alexandrine Roy 🌱

It was Alexandrine's great grandfather, Victor Roy, who originally founded the family domaine with but a handful of vines to his name.
In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar.
With a dedication to enhancing the Domaine's reputation, Alexandrine Roy has successfully implemented measures such as controlled yields, extensive vine ploughing, and meticulous grape sorting during harvest. These efforts have resulted in a more concentrated and flavourful grape production for the family domaine.

2023 Burgundy Harvest 🌱
"September has been all about the Heatwave Harvest, which in fact began in the last days of August." - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.

Harvest began in Burgundy on the 28th August, with only the earlier pickers taking to the vines. Majority of the plots did not commence picking until the second week of September. With days and days of cloudless skies and temperatures a consistent 30-35 degrees it was a hot harvest across the region.
The Côte de Beaune plots have now completed their picking, with the Côte de Nuits not far away. Jasper Morris is drawing comparisons to the 1992 vintage for the whites, and 2017 for the reds at this stage and has been a bountiful vintage to watch unfold over the coming years.

Burgundy wine labels are written to convey two key elements: where it comes from and who made it. 🗺️🧑‍🌾

Whether bound by traditions, AOC restrictions, or filled with pride over their plot locations, Burgundy wine labels are famously complex. Distinguishing villages from vineyards, and domaines from négociants requires a certain understanding about how Burgundy's wine system works.

Le Club allows members to be exposed to the top cuvees of the region and become more and more familiar with how each producer represents their wines.

🌱Terroir... It is a single French word that encapsulates all the most important concepts of the land on which plants grow. The origins of a great wine lies in the elements of impeccable terroir with the five key elements to French terroir being: location, soil, climate, vines, and people.

Similar to humans, vines also have their comfort zones in which they can bloom. Yet the best growth potential comes when under a reasonable level of stress and discomfort, again similar to that of a person. For the vines this can be identified by altitude, moisture, hours of sunlight per day, average temperature and several other elements. Each varietal has its own comfort zone in which it grows best, allowing for different regions across the world to develop and interpret a varietal to suit its terroir.

Grand Cru finesse ✨... While Thibaud Clerget does not own the vines of this plot, he is in charge of the viticulture and therefore has comfort in knowing the end to end life of the grapes he purchases. Le Club members get to enjoy a bottle of this beautiful Corton this September.

Mid crimson, showing a very toasty and lactic style of new wood. Very juicy behind, the whole bunch is almost hidden but I suspect stretches out the finish nicely, and the fruit is not too ripe. Finishes very well, as long as the oak calms down. Actually very long. 92-95 pts, Jasper Morris.

September Producer - Thibaud Clerget 🌱

The unstoppable Thibaud Clerget has continued to impress not only me but critics from around the globe. Into his 7th vintage for 2021, he has truly found his stride and the wines are a strong reflection of the way in which he continues to push boundaries and achieve that next level above.

Our Le Club members will be securing an incredible set of wines this September from a portfolio of vines set to impress and only continue to grow in size and renown.

"Clerget kicks the ball out of the park in 2021; perhaps my favourite of all the growers I tasted in Volnay" - Neal Martin
