Located alongside Fukiagehama Beach (the longest sand beach in Japan), Kanosuke distillery was founded in 2017 and began production in the capable hands of president and master distiller, Yosh*tsugu Komasa. The area is becoming known for its whisky production as Mars’ Tsunuki distillery is also located on the same street. Part of the historic Komasa Jyozo company, Kanosuke is equipped with three pot stills, each with different neck shapes and lyne arm angles. This allows the distillery to experiment and create different styles of spirit for single malt and blending. In September 2021 it was announced that Distill Ventures, part of the drinks giant, Diageo, had joined the fledgling project as a 50:50 minority investor. This move saw Kanosuke distillery join the likes of Denmark’s Stauning and Australia’s Starward distillery in the Distill Ventures portfolio of whisky brands. The first single malt release from the Kanosuke distillery debuted in June 2021.

This unpeated single malt has been aged in ex-American white oak casks before being bottled at cask strength.

The bottle shape is based on the motif of a pot still used at the distillery.

Sullivans Cove 17 Year Old, HH0363 American Oak
Thornbury Spirits

Located on the south-eastern coast of the eponymous island, the Tasmania distillery was established in 1994 and is Australia’s second oldest operational distillery. A settlement at Sullivans Cove began when a group of military personal and convicts arrived on the west bank of the river Derwent in 1804. Having access to such pure water and fertile land, the cove was perfect for whisky production and by 1824 the settlement had sixteen legal distilleries. This was not to last thanks to Governor John Franklin, who barred the act of distillation in 1838 due to his belief that spirits were a bad influence on people. This period of prohibition lasted for over 150 years but finally, in 1994, Patrick Maguire founded Tasmania distillery. He would go on to enjoy great success and receive worldwide praise for his releases which include the now legendary French Oak single cask stock. Maguire eventually sold his distillery in 2016 to a family-owned company led by Adam Sable, the former general manager of Scotland’s Bladnoch distillery. Today the distillery is renamed after its acclaimed Sullivans Cove single malt brand, but also boasts a small profile of various other spirits, including brandy, gin and vodka.

This whisky was distilled in 2000 and aged in single ex-Bourbon cask for 17 years. It was bottled at cask strength for Thornbury Spirits of Victoria, Australia.

Jim Beam Distiller’s Masterpiece Bourbon

The Beam family (anglicised from the German surname Böhm in the 18th century) are the greatest dynasty in all of American distilling, with members involved in nearly every Kentucky distillery during the 20th century. Perhaps none more important however than James “Jim” Beauregard Beam, who rebuilt his family business following the repeal of Prohibition, re-opening the famous Clermont distillery in 1935. The company is now the best-selling bourbon brand in the world (due to Jack Daniel’s refusing to be categorised as such). They operate two Kentucky distilleries, the eponymous Jim Beam in Clermont and the Booker Noe distillery in nearby Boston, and since their purchase of National Distillers in 1987 also have a wealth of historic brands under their banner. Since 2014 the company has been a subsidiary of Suntory in Japan, which has widened its portfolio into the Scotch and Japanese whisky industries as well.

This edition, the Distiller’s Masterpiece, has been finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.

Berry Brothers & Rudd Peated

Part of their Classic Range, this blended malt whisky by Berry Bros & Rudd was created using a variety of whiskies from across Scotland and aged in barrels that previously held peated Scotch whisky to inject some smokiness into the expression. The resulting whisky has plenty of orchard and tropical fruit character with the added elements of smoke and butterscotch sweetness.

Bimber Cask #93, French Edition
Virgin American Oak Cask

The founders of London’s Bimber distillery, Dariusz and Ewelina, moved from Poland to the UK in 2003, opening their distillery in the Park Royal area of west London twelve years later. Plazewski inherited his passion for whisky from his grandfather, who also distilled his own spirits. The company’s first casks were laid down on the 26th May 2016, and three years later they released their first single malt in September 2019. This became the first whisky to be distilled and bottled in London for over a century. The distillery carries a “farm-to-bottle” approach by sourcing 100% of its barley from a single producer and using traditional floor maltings and slow fermentation techniques. Distillation takes place via a 1,000-litre wash still and a 600-litre spirit still that were both crafted by Hoga of Spain.

Wild Turkey, Rare Breed Bourbon

A special barrel proof release from Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY. Blended from barrels of 6 to 12 year old bourbon.

The Wild Turkey distillery, then known as Boulevard, was built in 1935 by the Ripy Brothers in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The Wild Turkey brand name originated around 1941 when some, shared on a hunting trip, was referred to as “some of that wild turkey whiskey.” It is distilled at bottled by the Austin Nicholls company and for many years they had sourced the whiskey from the Ripy’s, but eventually bought the distillery from them in 1972, renaming it in the process. Of almost equal importance, the purchase of the distillery included the contract of legendary master distillery, Jimmy Russell, who started working there in 1954. His name is synonymous with the brand, and his son succeeded him 2015. In 2011 a new Wild Turkey distillery was built on the same site, replacing the original Ripy plant after 76 years.

A small, hand-built, artisan distillery nestled amongst the foothills of the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains, still hand distilling in time-honoured traditions and widely acknowledged to be amongst the prettiest of all Scotland’s distilleries

Originally a barley mill and croft dating back to the 1700’s, it closed in 1965 and over the next 25 years it was slowly and lovingly converted into a single malt distillery by a stone mason – Alex Fairlie – and started producing spirit in December 1990.

The distillery draws it’s water from the Spey River tributary -The River Tromie – whose waters are diverted into the old mill lade which originally powered the waterwheel for the old mill.

Waxhouse Whisky Co. Cotswolds 4 Year Old, 2016
Release 004, STR Cask

The Cotsworlds distillery was established in 2014 by New Yorker Dan Szor. When designing the distillery, he acquired the assistance of ex-Bowmore Master Distiller Harry Cockburn and Doctor Jim Swan who is an expert in cask maturation. The distillery began operating with a single mash tun, two washbacks and two stills supplied by Forsyths of Rothes, Scotland. The first cask was filled at the distillery on 22nd September 2014 and the inaugural product went on sale three years later in October 2017. The first few years have seen the distillery pick up various industry awards for its releases and today they boast a portfolio of whiskies, liqueurs, and other spirits.

This whisky was filled into a single cask in April 2016 and laid to rest for 4 years before being bottled in 2021.

Balblair 11 Year Old, 2000
2nd Release

Balblair distillery is situated in the northern Highland region, currently under the ownership of Inver House Distillers and previously part of the Hiram Walker empire before it became Allied Distillers. Allied sold it to Inver House in 1996, who introduced this much-loved vintage-dated core range in 2007. They were produced for over ten years before being replaced by an age-stated core range in 2018.

Distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2011, this is the 2nd release.

Chichibu Ichiro’s Malt Wine Wood Reserve

The Ichiro’s Malt brand is produced by Japanese firm, Venture Whisky, and is named after their founder, Ichiro Akuto. Venture Whisky was established in 2004 after Ichiro acquired the remaining unblended stocks of single malt from his grandfather’s Hanyu distillery. Ichiro’s Malt was born the following year, with the release of the original ‘Card’ series single casks of Hanyu. The company then opened its own distillery in 2008, the increasingly sought-after Chichibu. In addition to bottling these two single malts, the Ichiro’s Malt brand has also produced a number of sought after blended whiskies like this over the years.

Rumoured to be a vatting of the closed Japanese distillery of Hanyu with that of the relatively young distillery of Chichibu, where this whisky was matured, married and bottled.​

Given that this was first released in 2010 and and Hanyu has become thinner on the ground since, we can only assume the Hanyu content has or will eventually be removed. When that will happen or if it has already happened is unclear.

Finished in French oak wine casks.

Wolfburn Cask Strength 7 Year Old
Sherry & Bourbon Cask

Just 1840 bottles of this limited release were produced in total, a fraction of which has been allocated to the Australian market. A shade over seven years old and matured in a combination of Oloroso Sherry butts and ex-Bourbon quarter casks, this was bottled at natural cask strength to maximise flavour, power and intensity.

It’s a comforting Whisky, full of ginger, lemon, honey and floral/vanilla notes. The background of peat and heather are present but not overbearing as the palate opens up with citrus and buttery flavours, then flowing to grilled nuts and oat biscuits. The upfront sweetness is pulled through the palate by the light peat profile to a long and lasting finish. It sits comfortably at its abv and provides an abundance of drinking pleasure. Just add a roaring fire and a good book!
