Bordeaux vs Waiheke Island, Vintage 2002.

Not the fairest comparison as 2002 wasn’t an outstanding vintage for Waiheke Island in New Zealand but our Te Motu was still able to hold its own.

Of course the Lafite Rothschild was excellent, especially with food. It took some time to open up but had awesome structure.

Great to be able to taste wines from the same vintage with similar grapes from opposite sides of the world 🍷

🍷 - Château Lafite Rothschild, Premier Cru Classé, Pauillac 2002
🍇- 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc.

🍷- Te Motu, 2002
🍇 - Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec.

One of New Zealand’s finest Chardonnays - Kumeu River Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay 2020.

The Brajkovich family and Kumeu River Wines have long been internationally recognised as producing world class wine and in particular Chardonnay.

The first grapes from Maté’s vineyard were harvested in March 1993 and have been producing exceptional Chardonnay since, with the 2020 vintage in particular achieving a perfect score from critics James Suckling and Nick Stock.

This is only the second New Zealand wine to receive 100/100 from James Suckling.

Barrel fermented and 100% malolactic fermentation, followed by 11 months maturation in barrel. Mate’s Vineyard is still somewhat shy on the nose but with bottle age the full palette of complex aromas and bouquet of this wonderful wine will be gradually and seductively revealed.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir from 10 different Crus across Montagne de Reims it’s precise freshness with fresh red fruits - strawberry, redcurrant, raspberry and black cherry.

Krug Vintage Champagne, 2008.

For Champagne the 2008 vintage was an exceptional year. It began as a fairly poor growing season with a gloomy summer that suddenly took a turn and delivered bright, dry, sunny days - leading to a miracle harvest. The lower than normal temperatures also allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, preserve acidity and push the grapes into perfect ripeness.

Fresh, refined with rich, ripe fruit and balanced acidity the 2008 Krug is rightly labeled as one of the best.

Complexity and freshness - Domaine Tempier, Rosé 2021.

One of the most widely recognised estates in Bandol, Domaine Tempier has a rich history dating back to King Louis the 15th but it wasn’t until 1943 that the first rosé was bottled.

Made up of predominantly Mourvèdre with Grenache and Cinsault in the mix and aged 6-8 months before bottling. It’s a beautiful pale salmon, medium bodied, dry, with flavours of stone fruits, peach, rose petals and strawberry.

A complex yet refreshing rosé that won’t be around for long.

The original property was purchased in 1994 and now produces exceptional wines from Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Shiraz.

Powerful and complex these wines beautifully express the region, viticulture and wine making.

Chateau Minuty Prestige Rosé, 2020. A favourite wine delivered this morning.

Created by the Matton-Farnet family for the last 85 years, the Château sits on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Since 1955 the wines have been distinguished as a classified growth of the Côtes de Provence.

A blend from Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Rolle it’s a classic Provence rosé and transports sunshine in a glass.

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon, 2016.

An iconic Hunter Valley grape variety from a long standing family wine estate that also recently won best in show at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022 (The World Cup of Wine).

A beautiful wine that displays citrus, almond, honey, classic varietal waxiness and crisp acidity. Drink now or cellar for 10yrs+ if you can wait that long.

As one of the three main varieties used in Champagne - Pinot Meunier adds body and richness to a wine and contributes to Mumm’s signature Brut Champagne blend.

Established in 1876 and blended from a minimum of 100 crus, the wine is aged for at least 20 months and is a perfect Champagne for Christmas breakfast.

A truely Provençal wine, pretty, pale and pink.

Chablis Domaine and The Bougros Grand Cru are a perfect match, one for minerality and acidity, the other for creaminess.

Established in 1959 and as one of the biggest vineyard owners in Chablis, William Fevre has grown to become one of Burgundy’s great winemakers.

Hand harvested and organically grown, the attention to detail comes across in the wines.

It’s not Christmas without one of the finest of French Champagnes - Bollinger, Special Cuvée Champagne, NV.

Known as the purest expression of the Bollinger style and made up of more than 85% Grands and Premiers Crus, this wine has a higher percentage of Pinot Noir in the blend which gives it its distinctive character.

Toasting Christmas with one of our favourite wines of the year.
