Over the duration of Melbourne Food and Wine Mr West will feature incredible drinks & food from Victoria's High Country finishing with an epic party on Saturday 29th in collaboration with Jo Barrett and Co's Beechworth pie project Wild Pie⁠

The main event is happening on Saturday 29th of March where we are teaming up with Wildpie, a Beechworth based project led by award winning, superstar chef Jo Barrett. Jo and her team are changing the game in the pie business and tackling food waste head on. 'We care about the environment, great pies and making wild meats more available for the conscious consumer. Our handmade Australian wild game pies are more than a meat pie. They're a pie with a purpose - to use invasive species that are free range, organic and nutrient dense. The simple act of eating a pie can be both delicious and impactful.' ⁠

Mr West's Caleb Baker and Jo first met and worked together back in 2012 on the Greenhouse By Joost pop up restaurant project as part of MFWF and are excited to once again be working together for another MFWF event!⁠

Jimmy is back for our Spirit Spotlight this week!

This week i’m keen for everyone to try the High Country gin from Backwoods Distilling Co in Yackandandah up past Beechworth. A true family owned craft distillery with a passion for precision and showcasing Australian ingredients in their bottles. Founded in 2017 and quickly garnering praise from visitors to their distillery and the Melbourne hospitality scene they are going from strength to strength, nabbing awards across their portfolio and for this gin specifically a recent gold medal at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards and silver at the prestigious London Spirits Competition.

I’ve been a big fan of their cask finish Whisky's for a while now but have only recently, started exploring their gins. Crafted with native High Country botanicals including Pepper berry, strawberry gum, peppermint gum, wattle seed, lemon myrtle. This is a fresh, bold, super aromatic gin and I love it. There is so much juniper on the nose initially playing great with really resinous pine notes and a restrained citrus character. The flavour is smooth and very well balanced with lovely pepper spice and coriander and again the citrus is gentle with some pithy blood orange.

This is a very versatile gin great in a G&T but I had mine with soda mint and lemon the other night and that was a treat. If you want to sip and appreciate it you could pair it with a small pour of a dank West Coast IPA to really lean into those resinous aromatics.

Neighbourhood Night is back on tomorrow! Jas is stoked to be showcasing one of her favourites for this week's spotlight and it's certainly got us feeling pretty thirsty 🤩

This time around I would love to spotlight one of my favourite aperitifs and cocktail ingredients, Suze! A French liqueur that has been crafted since 1889 with a bittersweet gentian flavour and bright yellow colour. I’ve always been more of a bitter flavour fan, add in Suze’s earthiness and you've caught my attention! Suze has such a wonderful rooty, earthy flavour, it always adds so much depth to whatever you’re making with it. It makes the most refreshing highball with tonic and a touch of lemon or grapefruit zest, but my personal recommendation would be the Negroni Bianco. For an even more refreshing, summer-friendly drink, ask us for a white Negroni Sbagliato, substituting Campari with Suze, sweet vermouth with Lillet Blanc, and gin with an effervescent sparkling wine. It’s the perfect in-between cocktail for a sessionable sunny day.
