Our venue manager Jack has us covered our 'Spirit Spotlight' this week! Have a read of what Jack has to say about Garden Swift Gin below.

Garden Swift has been a staple on the back bar at Mr West for a while now. Made by Gloucester based distiller Barney Wilczak, this gin is made with 34 different botanicals that are grown, selected and harvested by Wilczak. As the batch sizes are only limited to 200 bottles there is often some variances batch to batch, but for me the Sicilian blood oranges used are always a dominating characteristic.

Fun fact, this is my Mum's favourite Gin and the only time she's sworn in a text message to me was when she first tried this Gin after I gifted her it for Christmas. Now whenever I gift her a different Gin it's always compared against this one. I would recommend having it in a G&T with a wedge of orange 🍊

Next up from our latest releases under our Good Juice wine label is the 2024 Good Juice 'White' Vermentino, Clare Valley, SA⁠

Good Juice is our very own wine label. This one made in collaboration with Jono Koerner at Gullyview Estate. 100% Vermentino, direct pressed, spontaneous fermentation in old French oak then aged in steel on fine lees for 9 months. No fining or filtering, minimal sulphur added. Aromas of citrus blossom, grapefruit, subtle white pepper. Fresh & clean but with some lovely light limestone driven mineral texture. Zippy acidity, lemon curd, nashi pear and classic Vermentino salinity. Delish!⁠

Neighbourhood Night is back tomorrow and this week Lachy has another epic selection for our 'Spirit Spotlight' Have a read below of what Lachy has to say about the Kanosuke Distillery Single Malt 🥃

Kanosuke Distillery, located in Kagoshima on the very southwestern edge of Japan, is a relative newcomer to the Japanese whisky scene. Despite being born out of their parent company, Komasa Jyozo, which has been producing shochu in Japan since 1883, Kanosuke Distillery only released its first whisky single malt four years ago in 2021. Despite this short time span, Kanosuke whiskies have already been growing popular in whisky circles, as well as winning awards at international spirit competitions, making it hard not to see them becoming both harder to acquire and to afford in the future. Maybe that won’t happen, but just in case it does, I wanted to make sure I could feature their core Kanosuke single malt now as part of our spirit spotlight.

The single malt is distilled using a combination of the distillery’s three unique copper pot stills and then aged in ex-shochu casks. This process lends the Kanosuke single malt a uniqueness that allows it to hit the difficult balance of being mellow without being boring—dangerously smooth to drink but still having enough going on to not feel flat, with new notes and flavours to discover with successive tastings. The nose brings notes of caramel, banana, and breakfast tea, while the palate starts with red apple and ginger, then finishes with butterscotch and a mild bitterness, as well as a slight smokiness throughout.

I would recommend drinking it neat and avoiding chilling or dilution, as I feel that it starts to feel too thin. The one exception to this rule, of course, is if you are drinking it on the beaches of Kagoshima, right outside the Kanosuke distillery itself.

Sharky has us sorted for Neighbourhood Night tomorrow with her 'Spirit Spotlight' debut 🤩

Hello Friends,

I'm thrilled to join the fantastic team at Mr West and share my first Spirit Spotlight with you!

The Willett Distillery, founded in 1936 by Thompson Willett, remains a family-run operation dedicated to crafting exceptional bourbon and rye.
The Willett Still Pot Reserve initially captivated me with its elegant pot still bottle, but it was the taste that truly won me over. This bourbon is a testament to traditional craftsmanship, meticulously distilled using limestone spring water, carefully selected grains, and unique yeast strains. Aged in new white oak barrels until reaching full maturity, it offers a delightful complexity. The use of wheat as the secondary grain, rather than rye, gives Willett Pot Still Reserve its distinctive smoothness and soft, approachable profile, classifying it as a wheated bourbon.

Expect a dry and spicy start that evolves into notes of blood orange, gum, and sweet oak. I recommend enjoying it neat or with a single drop of water.

Hazy Sexy Cool is a trio of IPA’s unique and distinct in style, each just as bomb as the next. Getting tapped up in the bar on Thursday night will be 3 fantastic beers. Hazy IPA Chilling deep in a hazy hue, bright citrus and tropical fruit notes make this IPA hella juicy and super fresh. West Coast IPA A nod to the West Coast style, this golden OG bites back with a bitter edge of supafly grapefruit, resin and pine.
