2023 Little Reddie Mountain Fizz

Mountain Fizz is single-site Shiraz sourced from a unique block in the Dash Farms vineyard on the southern ridge of Leanganook. In Pat's words, this is “a fabulous block of grapes” that he earmarked long ago for a delicate wine. The block sits on granite at a lofty 460 metres. The fruit was harvested on 24th March and gently whole bunch-pressed to old puncheons. The wine was transferred to stainless steel for malolactic conversion and allowed to settle before racking and a classic tirage bottling in early June 2023. Pat sums it up best: “We have a gorgeous balance of bright fruits with persistent acidity and a frame that allows the granite minerality to shine.” Wowsers!

We featured the 2023 LS Merchants Hoi Polloi White in our March Lo-Fi Lovers Club subscriptions 🍷

Based in the sun-drenched landscapes of Western Australia's picturesque Margaret River region,
LS Merchants believe that crafting great wines requires quality fruit and the expression of the unique terroir and climate where they were grown. Driven, curious and armed with years of wine expertise, founder and adventurous soul, Dylan, embarked on a journey to source the finest grapes from West Australia's diverse regions, beginning with Margaret River and expanding beyond as LS Merchants grew. They now sources fruit from many regions of WA including the Swan Valley, Pemberton, Manjimup, the Blackwood Valley and Frankland River. Their goal is to craft interesting, approachable, and most importantly, delicious wines while staying true to their belief that wine should be a source of enjoyment and not taken too seriously.
‘Hoi Polloi’ is a range of wines made for the people. Table wines made for everyday drinking that are clean & fresh. For the Hoi Polloi White both the Verdelho and Sauvignon Blanc were picked during the cool of the evening then left on skins for a minimal amount of time before being pressed and fermented in stainless steel to capture the aromatics and natural acidity. The Chenin Blanc was fermented in oak to increase texture and mouthfeel.

Dollar Bill's inaugural core range beer solidified its permanent status by clinching the Champion Mixed Culture Beer title at the Indies in 2019. This wine barrel-aged golden sour boasts a captivating textural acidity, featuring ripe stone fruit, lacto funk, and subtle hints of brett. The beer's distinct character is intricately woven with the flavors acquired during its time spent maturing in pinot noir and chardonnay barrels. It's a harmonious blend that earned its place in the lineup through both recognition and the intricate infusion of unique and delightful tasting notes.

Bacchus Brewery began its venture in 2005 in the Brisbane suburb of Capalaba, initiated by Glen & Karen Pope as a brew-on-premise brewery focused on creating budget-friendly replicas of commercial beers. In 2010, the brewery changed hands to the current owner, Ross Kenrick, marking a shift towards producing craft brews under the Bacchus Brewing label. Today, they stand as one of the country's most prolific brewers, introducing an average of three new beers per week from their pilot system brew kit.

One noteworthy creation is Toblerale, a robust Barleywine brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of W***y Wonka. This punchy brew boasts dominant notes of milk chocolate, honey, and almond nougat, creating a palate-rich experience. The warming alcohol heat adds depth, enhancing the beer's sweetness and body. Here's to Bacchus Brewing, a journey from budget replicas to crafting unique and celebratory brews!

Rodenbach Evolved stands as a flawless showcase of the ageing prowess inherent in the Flanders Red style. While their flagship Grand Cru undergoes an 18-month aging process, Rodenbach Evolved follows the same base beer but takes it to the next level with a remarkable 10-year maturation in oak foudres. The outcome is a beer of incredible nuance, featuring aromas and flavors reminiscent of green apple, leather, oak, and red fruits. This complexity is beautifully balanced by a rich and satisfying acid profile, complemented by the sweetness of the red malts, which helps to soothe the acetic acid character akin to vinegar. Truly a testament to the artistry of extended ageing.

The Brave New World series by 8 Wired introduces a revival of historic beer styles, and the Classic Scotch Ale stands as the fourth instalment in this journey. Drawing inspiration from the rich malty brews of 1800s Scotland, this iteration employs crystal and cara malts to craft a complex malt bill. Fermented with British ale yeast, it delivers a delightful caramel sweetness complemented by robust toffee and raisin notes. A nod to the past with a contemporary twist, this Scotch Ale promises a taste of history in every sip.

The small but mighty estate of Domaine Tourlaudiere is located in Vallet, the beating heart of Muscadet. Romain Petiteau’s family vineyard has been around since the 17th century, but it wasn’t until the early seventies that Romain’s father started his first vintage to be sold outside of the estate. Since 2007 it has been Romain who has run the show; his biggest undertaking being converting most of the vineyard to organic practices. Romain worked for a few years with the iconic Marc Peneau, the only committed natural winemaker in the Muscadet region for the last 30 years, making wine with no additions. Most recently Romain has also been experimenting with a few of the cuvees, blending modern winemaking techniques with traditional ones. Romain respects the terroir and also the integrity of each varietal, making him very much a winemaker to watch in the coming years. Muscadet as a region is greatly undervalued, the whites are sleeper hits, reminiscent of Chablis, without the price tag.
This Muscadet is a racy, mineral white from the Loire Valley. It offers light, honeyed aromas with a mineral edge. Time on lees has developed a palate of intrigue and texture. A flirtatious medley of ripe citrus, stone fruit, bread dough and saline minerality all awash with refreshing acidity and intense personality.

20/12/2023

Le Facteur, translating to ‘The Postman’, is a dynamic partnership between Mathieu Cosme, an established biodynamic Loire producer working under the moniker ‘Domaine de Beaumont’ who has already gained a strong following in his own right, and his once-importer Fabien Brutout. Fabien first joined Mathieu back in 2008 to help in the vineyards and after the two quickly become fond of one another the duo decided to start Le Facteur, a pursuit for making unadulterated sparkling wine from Vouvray and following their passion for hands-off winemaking.
The two nowadays manage 10 hectares of Chenin planted on clay and limestone at 121 meters above sea-level, much of which sits at 90 years old and is all managed biodynamically. Picking is all done by hand, wines are fermented with indigenous yeast along with zero additions bar minimal sulphur inputs at bottling for some of the wines. When asked how ‘The Postman’ came about as an idea for their wines, Fabien explains; “back in the day it was common for the postman, a usually well-liked member of the community, to ride on his bike from house to house and from farm to farm delivering mail, often invited in for a drink at each house. By the end of his mail run he would be so drunk that some of the parcels never got delivered to the fortunate few still waiting on their mail”. These wines harness the classic and elegant power that Vouvray wine is so famed for providing but are married in with the idea that wine should be a playful and jovial pursuit, made to be relatable and drunk with pleasure.
The Brut Nature fruit comes from the 2-hectare clay and limestone vineyard clocking 90 years old. The Chenin is direct pressed, and barrel fermented then left on lees for 12 months in barriques before bottling and allowing secondary fermentation to occur in bottle with indigenous yeasts.

It's no secret that we love here at Good Booze Project 🍷

Scintilla is one of our favourite wine producers in Australia. Winemaker James Madden is a dear friend and a truly lovely human who is making some of the best Australian natural wines we have tasted. All his wines are produced from vines grown and managed with organic and/or biodynamic principles. All the grapes are carefully hand-picked then processed with a shovel and a fork. All the wines gently transferred by siphon using gravity and are not fined or filtered. No additions whatsoever; apart from love, and hard work.
Joy’s is a lovely blend of 3 varietals sourced from 3 different vineyards. Chardonnay nurtured by Dave Neldner in Tanunda, Barossa Valley. Sauvignon Blanc nurtured by Ross Christian in Morialta, Adelaide Hills. Pinot Noir nurtured by Greg Horner in Gumeracha, Adelaide Hills.
This wine is named after James’ mum. Who he describes as a ripper home cook, avid gardener, artist and a beautiful gentle soul. A premium vineyard blend. Fermented in a mixture of terracotta huevo and old oak and thoughtfully blended. On the surface a wildly fun drop but dig a bit deeper and it’s a layered complex whimsical wine. Let the bottle warm up a bit from fridge temp so you don’t miss the lifted aromas. Everyone will see different primary fruit notes here. Super fresh, clean and vibrant! The palate is so supple, the tannins seem represented by the softest of silk. Bloody yum…

The Val-Dieu Abbey has been standing in the Belgian region of Wallonia since 1216 and has a rich and long history of beer and brewing. The current iteration of its brewing story started in 1997, when the current owners started making beer in the style of the Cistern monks that once called the Abbey home. This Tripel is boozy and warming, with distinctive notes of spice and herbs coming through thanks to the the hops and yeast used in the brewing process.

01/12/2023

Arianna Occhipinti has quickly become one of the hottest names in natural/minimal intervention wine not only in Italy but across the globe. Arianna is the niece of Giusto Occhipinti, whose COS wines are amongst the very best of Sicily. In 1998, Giusto invited her to help him out at the wine exhibition, Vinitaly. Arianna was 16 at the time and knew nothing about wine but she enjoyed the experience so much that she decided to study viticulture and oenology. Unfortunately, this ended up being a little counter-intuitive as everything she had learned from Giusto such as organic viticulture, hand-harvesting and native yeast fermentations clashed with what she was being taught in school. Undeterred, Arianna started making her own wine with just one hectare of abandoned vines in the commune of Vittoria. Over the years, she has progressively expanded the estate by replanting 10 hectares of the region's indigenous Frappato and Nero D'Avola.

In 2014 Arianna built herself a new cellar giving her some desperately needed additional space which permitted Arianna to start a new program of concrete fermentation and aging for both the SP68’s, which used to be produced in stainless steel and fiberglass. The estate is about 15 km from the Mediterranean with the vineyards planted at 250m above sea level. All her vineyards are run on organic and biodynamic principles and all fruit is hand harvested. The winemaking process is natural with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling. The style of Occhipinti is fresh and pure with incredibly cool fruit. The wines are delicate yet full flavoured and glide across the palate.

The SP68 is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato. It is named after the main road that passes near Adrianna’s hometown of Vittoria in the south of Sicily. There’s some real dark fruit character in this wine. Blood plums, wild cherry, mulberry, and some tangy cranberry. Savoury spice, dried herbs, smoke, leather, earth. There are layers of complexity yet it’s so fresh and clean on the palate it is just an absolute joy to drink!

2021 Barraco Fior di Bianco

Featured in our Baller Bottles Club November subscription

Produced by Nino Barraco whose adventure started in 2004 with a personal ambition of making wines to communicate the native grape varieties of his region and its terroir. He is driven by a passion for wine, inspired by his family knowledge of peasant traditions and winemaking in Marsala. Every day he works checking the entire production, ranging from the vineyard to the vinification of five local grape varieties. Rather than trying to achieve perfection, he strives to develop the distinctive personality of his wines. He believes there are no limits to his wine making if he respects nature and his terroir. Nino’s are wines with an uncanny sense of place. With each swirl and sip they transport you to Marsala; the warmth, the breeze, the golden light and the sense that the sea is never too far away.

Fior di Bianco is made from Nino’s youngest vines planted over sand. It is mostly Grillo, with a little Catarratto and a touch of Zibibbo in the mix. Nino has mastered the balance of salinity and texture with this wine. There is a hint of skin contact, and you get more texture and phenolic that balance harmoniously with the saltiness of these Sicilian varieties. Some subtle ginger, citrus, wildflowers, and honey notes come into play as the wine opens up.

Yum!

Small Gods Brewing Hexenhaus 🍻

Based out of Auckland, NZ, Small Gods are a brewery dedicated to collaborative, historical and experimental brewing. Small Gods aim to brew historical styles to bring to light the weird, wonderful & rare styles that are often left on the wayside in today's intensely modern brewing scene. Hexenhaus is brewed in the style of a Roggenbier, a historical German Ale traditionally brewed with Rye. Using a base of Vienna malt and 3 different types of Rye, expect a complex and spice forward malt profile with notes of dark bread, light toffee and black pepper. Hallertau Tradition hops add an aromatic lift and a bitterness that gives structure to this malty brew.
