In the early hours of June 21st, 2010, high in the mountains of Kandahar Province, an American Blackhawk helicopter, flying low and fast and carrying Sierra One Sniper Team of 2 Commando Regiment, crashed, taking lives of three Australian Commandos and a member of the flight crew. All others on board were injured, some seriously. These brave and committed ‘band of brothers’ were once again being inserted deep into enemy territory in defence of freedom and liberty.
Our son, brother, partner, friend, colleague and mate was amongst those who did not survive.
Commando Private Benjamin Chuck was on his third deployment in Afghanistan and in the past had returned safely from these highly dangerous sorties engaging the enemy in this harsh and hostile land. The lives of many changed forever that dark and fateful night. in collaboration with Dead Reckoning have released the Benjamin Chuck rum release with 50% profits donated to the foundation. We now pay homage to Ben Chuck , a commando who was taken to early in Afghanistan.

A blend of pot and column distilled Foursquare rums, tropically aged for 8 years in Barbados in an ex-bourdon cask, then brought to Adelaide and given 12 months in a 40 year old Spanish Pedro Rodriguez Pedro Ximénez cask and then yet another year in the dry heat of Adelaide resting in an old ex Makers-mark bourbon cask before being bottled at 50%abv.

Dead Reckoning was founded in 2020 by Justin Boseley, an Australian by birth who is recognized as the 1st local independent bottler in Australia. Some are aged from local wine barrels and fortified wine barrels. It offers several terroirs such as obviously Australia but also South Africa and Barbados.

The Killik distillery is based in Belgrave, Victoria completely in the south of Australia. They use dunders and muck pits as seen in northern Jamaica. The fermentation time is long and they use wild yeast. They use a Pot Still Single Retort for the distillation stage.

This bottling was distilled twice in their Pot Still Single Retort in 2023. It is a High Ester rum. It would not be aged according to my readings and is identified as a spirit based on molasses since the aging must be 2 years for the use of the term "rum" in Australia. It is bottled without reduction at 55% alcohol by volume.

It is translucent,

On the nose, I have vegetal smells, a touch of molasses, followed by ripe fruits, peach in particular. I then have a slightly pastry side on light caramel, vanilla and cream. The retro-olfaction opens it but it remains intriguing, it skillfully surprises us I would say. I am told bubble gum and indeed, it is very strange to say but that's it with peach candies haha!!

On the palate, it is smooth and very surprising since a little soft, it seems not very powerful. However, the power is present during the tasting. The flavors move towards a more pastry side. Bubble gum and peach candy are back, ripe fruits a little funky it reminds me a little of some Savanna even if we compare it to some Jamaicans during my readings but I find it different although some similarities are there.

The finish is sweet, quite short but we remember this spirit for a long time after tasting it. It has its own personality and it remains a bit of a UFO in my opinion hihi.. It is interesting to discover but more experimental to my taste and you still have to like to lend yourself to these kinds of experiences. It was sold around 50 USD, so around $70. It would only be available in 355 copies.
