Dead Reckoning Rum

Dead Reckoning was founded in 2020 by Justin Boseley, an Australian by birth who is recognized as the 1st local independent bottler in Australia. Some are aged from local wine barrels and fortified wine barrels. It offers several terroirs such as obviously Australia but also South Africa and Barbados.

The Killik distillery is based in Belgrave, Victoria completely in the south of Australia. They use dunders and muck pits as seen in northern Jamaica. The fermentation time is long and they use wild yeast. They use a Pot Still Single Retort for the distillation stage.

This bottling was distilled twice in their Pot Still Single Retort in 2023. It is a High Ester rum. It would not be aged according to my readings and is identified as a spirit based on molasses since the aging must be 2 years for the use of the term "rum" in Australia. It is bottled without reduction at 55% alcohol by volume.

It is translucent,

On the nose, I have vegetal smells, a touch of molasses, followed by ripe fruits, peach in particular. I then have a slightly pastry side on light caramel, vanilla and cream. The retro-olfaction opens it but it remains intriguing, it skillfully surprises us I would say. I am told bubble gum and indeed, it is very strange to say but that's it with peach candies haha!!

On the palate, it is smooth and very surprising since a little soft, it seems not very powerful. However, the power is present during the tasting. The flavors move towards a more pastry side. Bubble gum and peach candy are back, ripe fruits a little funky it reminds me a little of some Savanna even if we compare it to some Jamaicans during my readings but I find it different although some similarities are there.

The finish is sweet, quite short but we remember this spirit for a long time after tasting it. It has its own personality and it remains a bit of a UFO in my opinion hihi.. It is interesting to discover but more experimental to my taste and you still have to like to lend yourself to these kinds of experiences. It was sold around 50 USD, so around $70. It would only be available in 355 copies.

In the words of On 23rd May 2011 the warrior pictured here, Todd Langley, led our quick reaction force deep into enemy territory without hesitation or fear to respond to four wounded teammates who had struck an IED. On this date in 2011 I would find myself as part of another quick reaction force, this time responding to Todd, who had been struck by enemy gunfire in the middle of a fierce gunfight in southern Afghanistan. Sadly there was nothing for us to do as he had been killed instantly. At the time he was hit Todd had been part of a roof team suppressing enemy fire to help facilitate the aeromedical evacuation of one of our snipers who lay critically injured with a gunshot wound to his neck on an overwatch position behind the target village. Yet another humble professional who I had the privilege of serving alongside and who l’m sure has taken his rightful place at the head table itn Valhalla. At 17 years old Todd enlisted in the Australian Army, joining the ranks of 1RAR in 1994 before successfully completing the commando selection and training course in 2004 and being posted to the now 2nd Commando Regiment. Each bottle sold 50% of the profits goes to , supporting current serving & former operators from the 2nd Commando Regiment

Sergeant Langley was an extremely experienced Section Commander who always set an example to all those who had worked with him. He was an exemplary Commando, a warrior and a leader who gave his best, and always got the best out of those around him. Sergeant Langley was universally respected by all the men and women of the 2nd Commando Regiment. Even after his death, his comrades remained inspired by the man he was and relentlessly took the fight to the insurgents.

Dead Reckoning Rum is extremely proud and privileged to create a series of rums in memory of the Australian commandos killed in action in Afghanistan. These releases have been developed in close cooperation with the families of the fallen soldiers and in collaboration with the Zero79 Foundation.

Each release will be unique, with the soldier’s story written by their families and loved ones. Every release will feature a different rum or whisky from various distilleries, countries, and ages. Dead Reckoning is a brand born out of both passion and frustration within the industry. I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to change the perception of the category one Bottle & 1 release at a time.

- TRL: What does the rum mean to you? What made you fall in love with rum and when did it happen?

Rum is many things to me. It’s a lifestyle, a passion, a way to meet new friends and introduce old friends to a world they have not yet known. I was fortunate enough to spend 10 years living in the Caribbean cruising around on billionaires Mega yachts visiting individual islands time and time again over the years. The laid-back casual lifestyle of the Caribbean combined with sipping on a cocktail on a tropical beach or sitting in a bar sipping on something I’ve not heard or seen before. I started drinking rum as a 15-year-old living in Australia and the passion has never wavered 35 years later.
