THE PHILIPPINES — MANILA, Philippines — Authorities announced Wednesday that a Filipina's body was discovered inside a suitcase abandoned beneath a bridge in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, last month.
The Philippine consulate general in Dubai said in a statement that it is cooperating closely with concerned authorities and the relatives of the unknown victim.
The consulate is also giving legal support to the victim's family to ensure that all correct legal procedures are followed and that justice is delivered, according to the statement.
"The consulate general expresses its heartfelt condolences to the deceased family once more." Finally, we want to remind everyone to respect the family's request for privacy during this difficult time," it said.
Local news reports cited Dubai police as saying the victim's body was discovered put inside a suitcase by a security officer under the Palm Island bridge in Deira, near the airport, on March 6.
In connection with the incident, police have detained a Pakistani man who is believed to be the victim's boyfriend.
According to Khaleej Times, the suspect, known as MNA in media, allegedly admitted to strangling the Filipina "with a piece of fabric after a heated fight about money."
The woman "was believed to have been on a visit visa and was residing in a flat with the suspect," according to a separate Gulf News article.
